The other main type of filter is called activated charcoal or reverse osmosis. The charcoal has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The charcoals absorb odors, and substances from gases and liquids. The two different ways to filter your water depends on the brand and model of your refrigerator. There is no way of changing which filter you can use. You have to make sure that you only get the kind that works with your specific model number or it will not fit and work right.
